Our story.

The African Student Association of Tilburg, or ASAT, started off around three years ago when four students (Nishi, Hawelti, Ray, and Mawunu) discussed the possibility of establishing a community for African students in Tilburg. A WhatsApp group, known as 'Afrika-UVT,' was created and has since grown to include over 100 students.

From this initiative, a few interested students began brainstorming how to establish a formal association for students of African heritage in Tilburg. The Founding Board (2019-2020) got our association on its feet by completing all the necessary legal and organizational work. Our statutes were drafted, and a Charter containing our mission and values as an association was outlined. The Founding Board included Emanuela Isac (President), Sehaam Abdule (Treasurer), Dennis Mutua (Secretary), Fatuma Hashi and Shima Mutaganzwa (Legal Directors), Abigail Vloet (Marketing Director), and Omer Omer (Administrative Director).

On September 3rd 2020, ASAT became a registered legal entity and the First Board (2020-2021) was announced: Sehaam Abdule (President), Abigail Vloet (Vice-President), Aissatou Sene (Secretary), Shima Mutaganzwa (Treasurer), Miah Ke-leigh (Marketing Director), and Shenhat Tedros (Event Manager).
